CHENNAI: Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital has been selected for a a prisoners' ward on the premises because of its close proximity to Puzhal prison. Last year when P Ramkumar, suspect in the murder of Infosys employee S Swathi, got electrocuted, he was rushed to the prisoners' ward in Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH). This had raised many eyebrows as GRH is too far from Puzhal.

Based on the recommendations of the prisons department, the state home department has ordered the Tamil Nadu prison department and the health officials to make arrangements for setting up a dedicated prisoners' ward in the Stanley GH.

The prison officials were asked to submit a detailed report on the time taking to reach both the destinations, as a full-fledged convicts' ward was set up in GRH.

It seems the prison officials are more concerned about the commute distance and time to travel to the hospital for the prisoners while the rest of the population take more than an hour to reach the hospitals routinely.Vijay Naidu

The distance between the Puzhal prison and Stanley GH is 12.8 km. During normal traffic, it will take at least 30 minutes to reach the hospital. Meanwhile, the distance to the the Government Royapettah Hospital from Puzhal prison is 18.7 km and it will take at least 45 minutes to one hour to travel the distance.

The home department officials also reviewed the relocation of the convicts' ward from GRH to the Stanley GH. Based on the request of the prison officials, the Stanley GH authorities set up a separate guarded building on the campus. The ward has 15 beds now, and the bed strength can be increased if needed, the hospital authorities said.
