700 kids in a tight spot as school loses CBSE affiliation

Chennai: Around 700 students of the Hiranandani Upscale School in Kelambakkam are in the process of migrating to other schools from the next academic year after the institution was disaffiliated by the CBSE due to 'serious irregularities' including running schools of different boards (CBSE and IB) in the same building.
The CBSE has also instructed the school not to conduct any classes under the board from the next academic year.
The school management said that the institution is helping CBSE students migrate to other schools to make the transition process easier. It also said that the disaffiliation would not impact the current batch as students will be allowed to write the Class X and XII board examinations.
Since last year, the school has seen a number of protests as parents had raised their voice against the management and had also demanded the removal of the then director of the school.
Ajith, a parent whose child studies in Class X, said that it was quite disturbing to know that he would have to find a new school next year. "There were some issues earlier but the teachers were dedicated and we didn't think the institution needed to be closed," he said.
Although the notification was issued recently, parents said that they were informed about it two months ago, which was helpful for them to plan ahead. "We were told that we would have to migrate to other schools by August itself, so it didn't come as a sudden shock," said a parent.
A statement from the school management said, "Through our Trusts and Foundations, we run various schools that are affiliated with various boards, including ICSE, Cambridge and the IBDP, but we find ourselves at odds only with CBSE." Officials from the CBSE regional office in Chennai were unavailable for comment.
