No legal heir certificates to Jaya niece, nephew
CHENNAI: Former CM Jayalalithaa's nephew Deepak Jayakumar and niece Deepa Jayakumar have been denied legal heir certificates by revenue officials, who have advised them to move the appropriate court for getting the document.
Their application was rejected on the ground that only the immediate family (spouse, son and daughter) members were eligible to receive legal heir certificates from revenue officials.
The revenue authorities declined to entertain an application filed by Deepak — which according to officials, was also filed on behalf of his sister Deepa —with the Mylapore taluk office in August. The application was sent to Guindy taluk office on September 21, as Deepak's T Nagar residence comes under the jurisdiction of the Guindy office. In a two-page reply sent on September 22, the office directed him to approach a civil court for a succession certificate. As per Hindu Succession Act, 1956, you can get the succession certificate from the civil court," the tahsildar said. The officer also pointed out certain lapses, including lack of documentary proofs such as Jayalalithaa's death certificate, Aadhaar card, family ration card and voters photo identity card, in the application.
While Deepak was unavailable for comment, Deepa said none could say the family had nothing to do with the former chief minister. "It is unacceptable. The whole world knows who she is and who we are. So what is the point in delaying the paper work? We will do all that is needed to establish that we are legal heirs of Jayalalithaa," Deepa told TOI. She said that until Wednesday she had no knowledge of the application filed by her brother.
Deepa said it was best to go to court and that she could go up to four generations to produce the evidence. "We have not come from out of nowhere.
We were not hiding all these years. We have to go into the lineage, going from great grandfather. We will get all the relevant documents and necessary evi dence, if at all needed. All this is a well-known fact. We are not claiming madam's legacy anew. We are her family and everybody knows that," she said.

Deepa said her efforts to get information like who signed the relevant papers in hospital to get Jayalalithaa's mortal remains from hospital, through RTI Act, ended in vain so far.
Deepa moved the high court last month opposing the Edappadi K Palaniswami government's plan to convert Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence into a memorial, without the consent of the legal heirs. The case is yet to come up for hearing.
