NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended a homogenous syllabi for psychology courses at undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD levels across universities, while claiming that the present content is not "rooted in the national ethos."

According to notification, an expert committee has drafted a new syllabi for the BA/BSc, MA/MSc and PhD of the psychology courses, taking into consideration the "developments in the field of psychology with special relevance to the Indian context." The committee looked into several aspects like teaching and research in the subject to come up with a model syllabi.

The notification has been criticised by several Delhi University teachers, who said it was an example of UGC overreach.

The teachers argued that a homogeneous syllabi will not work as there is vast differences in the infrastructure and teacher quality across India.

"You can't have homogeneity of syllabi as one aspect may not be viable for other institutions. The syllabus at DU met all international standards and we must first look if the syllabi created by the experts even meet those standards," said Narender Chaddha, a former DU psychology professor who is the dean of behavioural science at Manav Rachna University.

Another DU professor Navin Kumar said, "Every institute has its own method of teaching which would be adversely impacted by homogeneity."

Aryabhatta College psychology professor Ravi said, "The same syllabi may be beneficial for other universities as they could also adopt the same standard of the courses we teach. The students... will also get the opportunity to get the same quality education." He pointed out that there is a need to improve the infrastructure and teaching quality of other universities.
