If selected, each university will get Rs. 200 crore every year for five years to improve facilities to the world class level
The Higher Education Department has approved the request of three State universities to apply for the “Institute of Eminence” scheme announced earlier this year by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The scheme aims at creating 20 institutes of eminence, including 10 in the government sector. If selected, each university will get Rs. 200 crore every year for five years to improve their institution into a world-class facility.
The three universities that would be applying are — Anna University, University of Madras and Bharathiar University.
They will have to pay a fee of Rs. 1 crore. “The universities had written seeking approval to pay the fee and we have sent the letter,” said Higher Education secretary Sunil Paliwal.
However, for universities to compete for the scheme it is necessary that the constituent arts and science colleges be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The government colleges that had been accredited earlier but failed to renew their accreditation had been asked to take up the renewal process.
The government colleges affiliated to other universities have also been urged to participate in the accreditation process. The regional joint directors of college education have been roped in for the purpose, he said.
On Wednesday, the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education held its monthly review meeting with university vice-chancellors, registrars, and controllers of examination.
The officials had wide-ranging discussions on various subjects — including streamlining the process of digitising educational certificates of candidates passing out of the institutions. The National Securities Depository made a presentation and the university officials were told to ensure linking Aadhaar number with the certificates.
