Driver of SUV dozes off; vehicle rams stationary lorry carrying iron rods

Eight persons of a family from Chennai, including an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, died after the sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in rammed a stationary goods carrier from behind near the Samayapuram toll plaza on the Chennai - Tiruchi national highway in the early hours of Sunday.

The fatal accident occurred when the SUV packed with 13 persons heading to Pettavaithalai near Tiruchi crashed against the stationary heavy goods carrier, bearing an Andhra Pradesh registration number, parked on the left side of the highway, at around 4.30 a.m.

The impact of the collision was such that eight persons on board the SUV died on the spot, while five others, including two girls aged three years and two years, sustained injuries. The police suspect that the SUV driver Balamurugan had dozed off for a moment and lost control. All the victims were from Pallikaranai in Chennai.

The police gave the names of the deceased as M. Subramani, 65; his wife S. Jayalakshmi, 58; sons S. Balamurugan, 42; and S. Vijay alias Vijayaraghavan, 36; son-in-law Manjunathan, 40; Gomathi, 30, wife of Vijayaraghavan; M. Kandasamy, 11; and Nivedha, 12, daughter of Manjunathan.

The injured — Bhackiyalakshmi alias Preetha, 35, wife of Manjunathan; M. Ramya, 3; M. Kavitha, 38; V. Kandhalakshmi, 12; and V. Jayashree, 2 — are undergoing treatment at the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital here as in-patients.

In ‘no parking’ area

The family was proceeding to Pettavaithalai for a short stay in a new house which was purchased in that place, said the police. The stationary truck was transporting iron rods from Andhra Pradesh for a private company at Nagamangalam near Tiruchi. The driver of the goods carrier had alighted after parking the vehicle on the left side of the highway near the toll plaza to have a cup of tea in a nearby stall when the accident happened.

Teams of police personnel and fire fighters rushed to the spot to rescue the injured and retrieve the bodies from the badly mangled SUV in an operation that took over two hours as the front portion of the car had gone under the goods carrier.

The police said the truck driver had stationed the vehicle on a ‘no-parking’ area. The truck driver S. Venkatesh, 30, of Srikalahasthi in Andhra Pradesh, who escaped from the spot, was later held by the police.

The Samayapuram police have registered a case under IPC sections including 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 337(causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). The truck driver has been named as the accused. The investigation would be carried out by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Lalgudi, since the fatal accident had led to multiple casualties, said Ziaul Haque, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi, after inspecting the spot.

The completely damaged SUV was later shifted from the spot using a crane. The place where the accident took place was cordoned off by the police. It may be recalled that three years ago, nine passengers on board a State express transport corporation bus died in a collision with a trailer lorry carrying protruding iron sheets on the highway near Samayapuram.
