Guidelines issued by School Education Department

Collector K. Rajamani has directed all schools functioning under the School Education Department to get permission from District Education Officers or Chief Education Officers before taking children on study tours.

Issuing guidelines for study tours, Mr. Rajamani said headmasters or principals of institutions who failed to adhere to the rules would be liable to disciplinary action. The consent of parents should be taken, with the tour plan given in writing and their signatures obtained.

Unsafe tours, which led to untoward incidents, reflected badly not only on the school but also on the entire department, he said in a press release here.

Taking students to water courses was a strict ‘no’ and the duration of the tours should not exceed four days, he said.

Schools must plan trips well ahead, at least two months in advance. Permission should be sought from department officials at least a month in advance. The schedule should be drawn up through consensus by convening a parent-teachers meeting. The tour should be planned taking into account the weather predictions.

The group should have a student-teacher ratio of 10:1. Students being taken on tour should be sensitised to safety and precautionary measures.

While travelling by bus, night travel should be avoided, he added.
