AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court on Thursday allowed an appeal filed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to discharge a PG medical student, Paresha Solanki, from the medical college of Sumandeep Vidhyapith, who is pursuing studies in the clinical course of MD, anaesthesia.
The student had cleared NEET in 2016-17, but did not score enough to figure in the centralized admission committee’s merit list. When the Centre decided to lower percentile marks in May 2017, she qualified for admission. However, her name did not appear on the merit list. She was then pursuing residency course in Baroda Medical College in non-clinical residency programme in Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM).
Solanki approached the university directly and she was granted provisional admission on basis of her NEET score. However, when MCI came to know about the admission, it directed the college and the university to discharge her from the course.
The student approached the HC against MCI’s decision to oust her from the course. MCI defended its decision by arguing that she did not get admission through the admission committee, which is the rule. The admission committee had not considered her for the merit list because she was enrolled in the residency programme. The student claimed that she had tendered her resignation from the residency programme before taking admission in MD, anaesthesia.
