MADURAI, OCTOBER 11, 2018 00:00 IST

She also seeks help to meet her educational expenses

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which had initiated suo motu proceedings after a girl had written to the Registry about her ailing mother and seeking financial assistance, on Wednesday directed the Kanniyakumari Collector to grant Rs. 5,000 as monthly assistance to her family.

A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar also took note of the fact that Rs. 1,000 is already being given to the family by the district authorities as financial assistance.

The Dean of Kanniyakumari Government Medical College, who was earlier directed by the court to file a report on the health condition of the woman, submitted that the scope of her recovery was very limited. The report was based on the findings of a team of experts.

The girl, R.S. Aadharsha, in her letter to the Registry said that her mother had been in coma since 2000 following a caesarean operation.

She blamed the Kanniyakumari District Co-operative Hospital for her mother’s present state, which she claimed was the result of wrong administration of local anaesthesia during childbirth. She said that the family was dependent on the pension of her grandfather.

Aadharsha, currently studying in a college in Kanniyakumari, also sought help to meet her educational expenses.

She has filed a complaint before the Madurai District Consumer Forum seeking compensation from the co-operative hospital.
