Govt nominee out, MKC Nair health varsity vice-chancellor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor P Sathasivam has appointed Dr M K C Nair as the new vice-chancellor of Kerala University of Health Sciences by rejecting the government nominee, Dr P C Kesavankutty Nair.

The government had submitted a four-member list to the governor and recommended the name of Kesavankutty Nair, who had served as acting president of Medical Council of India in 2009, for the post.

The other nominees were Dr Rani Nair, wife of Dr Kesavankutty Nair and MCI member; Dr D Dalus, head of general medicine department at the Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital; and Dr M K C Nair, director, child development centre, SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

However, the list ran into a controversy with the governor receiving allegations against three nominees. Following this, he summoned health secretary K Ellangovan and the final decision was kept pending.

Dr Kesavankutty Nair and Dr Rani Nair were alleged to have close links with former MCI president Dr Ketan Desai, who is facing a probe on various corruption charges. Similarly, students of Thiruvananthapuram medical college had levelled allegations against Dr Dalus.

Dr M K C Nair, a paediatrician of repute, will be the second vice-chancellor of the university and he will succeed Dr K Mohandas.
