Chennai: Residents of Chrompet, Pallavaram, Zamin Pallavaram and the city suburbs are worried as the frequency of bus services including the small bus services have taken a hit. Frequency on two routes S81 and S82 covering several interior stretches from Chrompet to Pozhichalur have fallen drastically.
"The buses were of great help as it connected us to several areas but now we are unable to commute as the service is not as frequent as earlier. The MTC should step in and ensure that residents and commuters are not put to hardship," said Ravikumar, a commuter.
Social activist and longtime Chromepet resident V Santhanam said, "Most of those employed in the IT industry have moved to the southern suburbs in the city and the bus services and frequency have fallen short of expectation."
Residents of Sembakkam and Chitlapakkam have also been affected due to low frequency of buses.
"If one has to reach Central from here we have to take a bus to Pallavaram or Tambaram and then another bus from there as the frequency of buses is very low. Even if there is one service and it is jam-packed, one has to wrestle their way to get a seat in the bus," said V Rajendran, a resident of Chitlapakkam.
Commuters also urged the MTC authorities to ensure that the buses plying on the Tambaram-Velachery main road stop at Rajakilpakkam bus stand. P Muthu, a regular commuter, said, "Authorities should ensure regular frequency of bus 51G plying from Tambaram East to Vengaivasal for the benefit of commuters. The small bus S3 from Chromepet to Madambakkam should also increase its frequency as the frequency now is too low. In addition, S10 bus plying from Chrompet to Jothi Nagar should also increase its frequency."
