Now, rent a bicycle for Rs 10 per hour in the city

Chennai: The public can now rent bicycles for as low as Rs 10 per hour in Besant Nagar.

The facility has been made available through an independent project by Zoomcar, a car rental startup. Trying to make inroads into the Smart City project, the bicycle rental service aims to reduce congestion on city roads. The project aims to reach 300 locations in the city.

As part of the project, over 130 bicycles have been put to service in Besant Nagar and Adyar. For people to rent the cycles, they need to show a government-issued ID card, register for the service with their phone numbers, pay the amount depending on how long they plan to rent the cycle and then use it. A photocopy of the ID card is to be submitted to a staff member of the service.

Named 'Pedl' the cycles will be available from morning to evening 6pm. However, from November 1 these cycles will be replaced by what the company calls 'smart cycles'.

"Unlike the cycles that are maintained by our staff, smart cycles will be made available for hire at Rs 10 for an hour. Tracked by GPS and operated by an app, dockless bicycles will not need manual maintenance," said a representative from Zoomcar, that is set to start the project in two more cities across India.

"For dockless bicycles, from payment to locking, unlocking and tracking, everything will be done using an app that has to be downloaded by the renter," the representative added.

Currently, the bicycles for rent have been placed on pavements, which has not gone down well with Besant Nagar residents.

"If along with vendors and encroachment, private firms like these start occupying pavements, then what example is being set for the public?" asked Shanthi Kamalsekaran, a resident of Besant Nagar.
