Following the increase in platform ticket prices, the next step in decongesting Chennai Central station and beefing up security will be the closing of certain exit and entry points at night.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railways officials will form a three-tier security structure to prevent people from loitering inside the station.
“Armed policemen will monitor people walking into the station and railway officials will check the travel or platform tickets of those walking out. Vehicles will not be allowed to halt after dropping passengers. We are evolving a plan for car parking,” said an RPF officer.
“We will take measures to rehabilitate mentally ill persons and beggars who rest on the station premises,” said a GRP officer.
Certain entry and exit points will be closed between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. “There are over 13 such spots at Central alone,” added the RPF officer.
Once the gates are closed, the entire station will be combed. “Those without valid tickets will be sent out,” said a railway official.
K.S. Gopalakrishnan, former zonal railway users’ consultative committee member, lauded the move. “Especially during summer, many platform dwellers sleep inside the suburban and Chennai Central railway stations. They should be directed to the Corporation’s night shelters,” he said.
“Incidents such as the train ‘hijack’ from the Moore Market Complex in 2009 and the recent bomb blast at Central can be avoided if stringent checking is at place,” said a former police officer.
