THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state health service has become a non-attractive career option for the MBBS graduates it seems, as only 54 out of 239 candidates in the PSC assistant sugeon ranklist joining service.
The candidates were asked to report at the directorate of health service on Monday for their placements across the state in different hospitals. Even though 160 reported at the directorate only 54 candidates showed the willingness to join service. The remaining 106 candidates sought extension of time for joining citing various reasons including time to complete the post graduate courses they are undergoing at present. However, the authorities have claimed that these 106 candidates would join the service and a written undertaking had been taken from them on this.
For those who are undergoing post graduate courses at present the directorate of health service has executed a bond worth Rs 5 lakh from the candidate with an assurance that they would report for duty soon after the completion of the course. "In case they fail to join, they will be debarred from any other employment in the government service and they will have to pay Rs 5 lakh to the government," said a senior health department official.
At present there are vacancies of 219 assistant surgeons, 51 civil surgeons, 156 junior consultants, 107 consultants, 26 senior consultants, two chief consultants and 17 posts in the administrative cadre.
