CHENNAI: The Madras High Court was informed on Monday that Dr Sanjay Srivatsava, retired professor of ophthalmology and Dr B Srinivasan, ADG (ME), DTE, GHs, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, were recommended to be the members of the Fee Fixation Committee and an order to that effect was communicated by the Department of Health and Family Welfare on July 21 last.
The fee committee constituted might also look into the fees for MBBS courses in deemed universities and the exercise in terms of the order of the Supreme Court was required to be done by the DGHS, the Court’s First Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar said on Monday.DGHS had informed the fees as determined by deemed universities and colleges. Hence, it was not for this court to go into that aspect, as the matter was before the apex court, the Bench added and posted the matter for further hearing on August 18.
The Bench was passing further interim orders on a PIL from Jawaharlal Shanmugham of Tiruvanmiyur to fix fees for medical courses offered by deemed universities. The petitioner submitted that the tuition fees fixed by the deemed universities was not correlated with the actual income/earning of the medical college and its teaching hospital. “The huge profit-making teaching hospital is not taken into account while calculating fee. Only the expenses incurred by the university and the hospital are considered. Giving posh atmosphere inside the campus cannot be the criteria to fix exorbitant fees,” he added.
