More rain likely till Saturday
Low pressure area may develop over Bay of Bengal
More rain is on the way to the city, which has been witnessing thundershowers in the evening for the past few days.
Heavy showers lashed several parts of the city on Thursday evening too. However, the weather observatory in the city recorded only 1 cm of rainfall till 8.30 p.m. Officials of the Meteorological Department said an upper air cyclonic circulation may develop into a low pressure area over north Bay of Bengal. While this may not directly cause rainfall, it would be one of the factors influencing thunderstorms in the State for two more days.
Rainfall would occur over many parts of northern Tamil Nadu and a few places in southern Tamil Nadu. S. Balachandran, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said the State has recorded its highest volume of rainfall in the past six years between June and so far in August. It has received 21 cm of rainfall, which is excess by 33% for the period.
Officials of the Meteorological Department said it is typical to have rain in the evenings during southwest monsoon due to convective activity. Chennai too would receive rain spells during evening or night till Saturday.
