Nashik: Dr Deelip Govindrao Mhaisekar, the new vice-chancellor of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), has stressed the need for interdisciplinary research in the field of medicine and the importance of doctor-patient communication.
Mhaisekar took charge as the vice-chancellor (VC) on Thursday. Speaking to newspersons on Friday, he talked about his vision for the medical students, the university and the patients. He was accompanied by MUHS registrar Dr Kashinath Garkal, controller of examination Dr Kalidas Chavan and public relations officer Dr Swapnil Torne.
Mhaisekar said the merits different streams of medicinal sciences varied from one another. Hence, research in various streams was important, which could be taken up soon for the benefit of patients.
He said there was a huge dearth of seats for post-graduation courses, as compared to degree courses in all the "pathies" of medicine. "A large number of doctors have taken degrees in different pathies. However, it is not possible to give admission to all of them for post-graduation courses. In this backdrop, efforts will be taken up to start fellowship programmes to enhance the skills of degree doctors, which is also aimed at providing quality services to patients," Mhaisekar said.
Meanwhile, the issue of attacks on doctors in various parts of the state and the country by the relatives of patients also came up during the media briefing. The new VC said communication skills of doctors would go a long way in preventing such incidents. "We are planning to start communication skill lessons for the post-graduate students of medicine," he said.
Mhaisekar said they would be studying the conditions of the University Grants Commission to provide sufficient scope of research to medical students. He that there were quite a few problems of employees pending at the government level and sincere efforts will be taken to solve them in the near future.
