Telangana starts disaffiliation of colleges under NTR health university

HYDERABAD: MBBS, postgraduate medicos and others joining medical and other allied colleges in over 120 government and private colleges in Telangana can finally hope to get their degrees from Warangal-based Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), 18 months after its formation.

This has become possible after the Telangana state health department kickstarted the process of disaffiliation for the colleges including dental sciences, nursing, Ayurveda, homoeopathy , Unani, naturopathy , physiotherapy , medical lab technician and nutrition and public health courses from Vijaywada-based Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) by passing a latest order.

While the order fixed the cut-off date to disaffiliate these Telangana-based colleges from NTRUHS followed by their reaffiliation to KNRUHS by June 1, 2016, the transition process seems to have already created some ambiguities as both the varsities would have dual control over some academic years, said experts.

"For instance, medicos who have already joined courses in colleges under NTRUHS jurisdiction at the time of their admission, would continue to remain their students till the completion of the entire course period. Their degrees and their examination papers would continue to be set by NTRUHS as per existing University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines," said Dr K Ramesh Reddy , member, Medical Council of India (MCI).

"Though reaffliation of colleges with KNRUHS will come into effect from June 1, 2016, existing students who joined various courses in medical and allied colleges like dental and AYUSH would not only have their exams conducted by Andhra-based NTR health varsity but also would get their degrees from there," said Dr T Venkateshwar Rao, registrar, KNRUHS.

He added that they are yet to obtain a for mal nod from the MCI and Union health ministry to take up the disaffiliation process but they would soon be writing to them separately to speed up the exercise.

However, the dual jurisdiction seems to have created confusion with T Junior Doctors' Association stating that they want complete control of Kaloji health varsity in matters of Eamcet and PG medical entrance tests and counselling.
