TN schoolteacher suspended for misbehaving with girl student

VELLORE: A social science teacher at the Government Higher Secondary School in Madhanur Tamil Nadu has been placed under suspension for misbehaving with a Class 10 girl student. The suspension order was issued against him on Tuesday following a departmental inquiry.

S Raji, who was taking social science subject for students of Class 6 to Class 10, had been troubling a Class 10 girl as she did not reciprocate his love. Unable to withstand the mental agony, the girl refused to go to school. When her parents demanded an explanation, she spilled the beans.

Angered over the teacher's misbehaviour, the girl's parents, relatives and neighbours picketed the school on Saturday. They demanded action against the teacher for misbehaving with the girl. They withdrew the protest following an assurance from the authorities that suitable action would be taken against the teacher.

Chief educational officer (CEO) of Vellore R Boopathy ordered an inquiry. The inquiry, which was conducted by district education officer Priyadharshini, revealed that the charges levelled against the teacher were true.

Acting on the DEO's report, the CEO suspended the teacher under the provision 17 (e) of the Tamil Nadu Civil Service (Disciplinary and Appeal) Rules. "We have framed charges against the teacher (Raji) and initiated departmental action," said the CEO.

The CEO has also sought an explanation from the school headmaster for not taking action in time.
