Chaos and mad rush in petrol bunks across Chennai By Express News Service |

CHENNAI: With the Modi government’s sudden decision to demonitise larger banknotes, chaos and mad rush prevailed in most of the petrol bunks in Chennai on Wednesday morning; them being one of the few places which the Central government had announced can accept the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currencies.

The salesmen in the petrol bunks turned out to be the most sought after men since this morning with people queuing up at the bunks for their turn. In some places, policemen had to be posted to regulate the large crowd.

With a sudden escalation in the demands for Rs 100 notes, some petrol bunk sales men are also placing a weird precondition - sales for only Rs 400 and nothing less. “I have run out of Rs 100 notes. I can afford only one note per customer," says a petrol bunk salesmen giving the rationale behind his demand.

In a few other bunks, the petrol salesmen ask their customers to pool in together the bills so that one person can pay them Rs 500 currencies and he would get the share from others who have Rs 100 notes.

But the most sought after customers in the bunks were those who have Rs 100 note with them. "I give preference to them so that I can pay the change to others," says a salesman.

KP Murali, president of Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association said that petrol bunks are facing a crisis in providing change and are facing tense moments as large crowds are flocking the bunks most to get their currencies exchanged. “They are not genuine petrol buyers,” he said.

“Police bandobust is being provided at few petrol bunks. The government while announcing that bigger notes could be exchanged in petrol bunks till November 11, should have made some arrangements to provide them with the change,” he said.

Petrol bunks have been instructed to take these currencies until November 11. Murali added that all the petrol bunks in the state are working. However, some were reported to have remained closed since last night.
