Pay Credited After Demise; He Had Told Friends About Death Threats: Cops
A police team, probing the mysterious death of a 2007 batch IAS officer in Lucknow on May 17, has found that his salary was withheld by the Karnataka government for four months. The salary was credited into Anurag Te wari's SBI ac count a week after he had died, the team which had gone to Bengaluru last week, said on Sunday .Anurag, 36, from Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, was found dead outside a state guest house in Hazratganj area of Lucknow on May 17. He celebrated his birthday with some batch mates in UP the previous night.
Anurag was commissioner food and civil supplies department when his salary was stopped. Deputy SP Avanish Mishra, who is heading the Lucknow police team, told TOI, “We examined the bank account statement and realized he was not paid salary for the last four months be fore he died. Salary was given to him on May 24.“
The team could gather that Anurag was among a group of 22 officers whose salaries were stopped due to indiscipline. “But I cannot say at this stage whether any other IAS or IPS officer, apart from Anurag, was part of the group,“ said Mishra.
The team is also probing what prompted Anurag to install CCTV cameras at his residence in Dollars Colony in Bengaluru in February .Six cameras were set up at his bungalow in March with the government's sanction.
“Around the same time, Anurag had told me and his close friends that there were threats to his life,“ his elder brother Mayank told TOI on phone from Bengaluru on Sunday .
The footage, however, did not help the Lucknow police as only three days' events were stored in the disk. The team came to know that some people from Anurag's department had visited his residence after his death. “We don't know how many people visited his residence as the previous recording is not stored,“ said Mishra.
“The Lucknow police team is following just one line of investigation -to prove Anurag died of some medical complications. But so far, the police have no evidence of respiratory disorder leading to death and the time is running out. They need to look in other directions, too,“ Mayank said. A woman PCS officer from Karnataka, posted as panchayat development officer in Bidar district, Mangala Kamble, told TOI, “As collector of Bidar district, Anurag acted strongly against corrupt government officials. They had patronage of politicians who ensured Anurag's transfer. He brought around many positive changes in Bidar, water conservation being the foremost.Eight government engineers were booked and sent to jail.“
She wanted to share the details with the Lucknow police team but the meeting could not be scheduled.
