NAAC report goes missing in Barkatullah University?

BHOPAL: Even after failing to improve its NAAC grading, Barkatullah University (BU) authorities seem to have adopted a casual approach towards it.

Sample this: After last year's NAAC accreditation, the inspection team had given a report to BU to make improvements in different university teaching departments (UTDs). However, UTDs are yet to receive the report even when the VC office had got it almost six months back. The UGC has made NAAC mandatory for every university and college to take accreditation. BU has been receiving B grade during last two accreditations. Educational institutions are graded under four categories which are A, B, C and D, denoting very good, good, satisfactory and unsatisfactory levels, respectively.

Pleading anonymity, a senior BU officer, said, "After every grading the inspection team submits a report to the vice-chancellor. This report carries feedbacks and suggestions by the team to improve the respective areas where they find bottlenecks. After receiving the report, the VC sends it to the concerned departments where NAAC suggested improvements. On the basis of this report, departments make improvements to get better grading in next inspection." However, the BU authorities apparently forgot to provide the report, having feedback, to the departments.

Sources said that in such a situation, BU will not be able to improve its accreditation in the next inspection. "Every department needs time to make improvement according to the NAAC report. If they don't get it on time then it won't be possible for them to do it," said a head of the department, without quoting his name.

When contacted, BU vice-chancellor Prof MD Tiwari, admitted that the report was received after NAAC inspection last year. He rubbished speculations that the report has gone missing. "The report is in the office and will be provided to the departments over the next couple of days," he said.

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the UGC to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. It is an outcome of the recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986), which laid special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India. NAAC was established in 1994 with its headquarters at Bangalore.
