The Southern Railway, keeping in mind that lakhs of people from across the country will throng the temple town of Kumbakonam for the “Mahamaham” festival scheduled next month, is gearing up to meet demands of the devotees.
The Southern Railways has already initiated effective steps for the creation of passenger amenities in Kumbakonam Railway Station, Vashishta Johri, General Manager, Southern Railway, told presspersons here on Thursday after inspecting the Salem Railway Junction.
The escalators will be commissioned at the Kumbakonam Railway Station shortly. All the other infrastructure facilities will be created well ahead of the “Mahamaham’ festival, considered the Kumbh Mela of South India.
Replying to a question, the General Manager said the Railways is working out the details of operating special trains from different parts of the country to Kumbakonam. The list of special trains will be finalised keeping in mind the demand.
