Now, confusion over MBBS admission deadline

TIMES OF INDIA

Hyderabad: Even as they appear fated to deal with a third Telangana Eamcet exam, further trouble is brewing for aspirants to government medical colleges.

As per Medical Council of India's (MCI) Regulations on Graduate Medical Education (RGME), 1997, the last date up to which first-year MBBS students can be admitted to a college is August 31. However, Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) vice-chancellor Dr B Karunakar Reddy says the deadline for admissions is September 30.

MCI member Dr K Ramesh Reddy said, "Till last year, the last date for first-year MBBS admissions in medical colleges used to be September 30 as mentioned in Appendix E of RGME. But this rule was amended in January 2016, advancing the admissions deadline to August 31 through a notification in Gazette of India."

In fact, in the 'note' attached to the amended rule, the MCI clearly states that "in any circumstances, the last date for admission/joining will not be extended after August 31."

The RGME also goes on to state that any student "identified as having obtained admission after the last date for closure of admission be discharged from the course of study."

However, Dr B Karunakar Reddy told TOI that the last date for completing admissions is September 30 as listed by the MCI in its RGME on page 10. Asked about the latest amendment to RGME fixing the deadline as August 31, he said, "We have written to the MCI seeking a clarification on this point. However, they have not responded to our query so far."

While maintaining there is no cause for worry, he pointed out how there is no sight of results for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) exam, held as recently as July 24, which makes meeting the August 31 deadline impossible in that case too.

Incidentally, the authorities in Telangana State Council for Higher Education (TSCHE) -- on whose behalf the JNTU conducted T Eamcet I and II respectively -- too back KNRUH. TSCHE chairman Prof T Papi Reddy said that the September 30 deadline is already in vogue. "In case there are extraordinary circumstances delaying the admissions, the government can approach the Supreme Court to relax the deadline," he said.

However, with the state government yet to notify the date for Eamcet III in the wake of its decision to scrap the second edition of the test due to question paper leak, experts fear that the confusion over the admission deadline will make matters worse.
