BENGALURU: The state’s health university is yet to take action against a nursing college for locking up members of a flying squad in an elevator despite a suo motu case being registered by the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) five months ago.

Express had reported the story on May 10 about the flying squad members getting stuck in an elevator of a nursing college where they had gone to check malpractice. The SHRC then registered a suo motu case against the college and issued a notice to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

The SHRC order passed after a hearing on June 8, a copy of which is with Express, reads, “Perused the news item published in The New Indian Express dated 10-5-2015 under the caption ‘Flying Squad Kept in Lift at Nursing Exam Copying Centre’ is registered as a suo motu case by the commission. Send a copy of the paper clipping to the Vice-Chancellor of RGUHS, Bangalore, for a report in the matter within six weeks.”

RGUHS has not reposnded to the order so far. When contacted, Registrar (Evaluation) Dr Sachidanand told Express, “We have issued notices to the squad members and to the college. Once we receive explanations from them, we will submit a report to the commission.”

Several medical professionals and senior faculties in the flying squads had shared the difficulties they faced even to enter examination centres where malpractice was going on, after which Express published a detailed report.
