NAGPUR: The central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) is requesting the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences to make mental health screening of all Resident Doctors mandatory every six months.

Speaking to TOI, central MARD president Dr Sagar Mundhada said that this had become a need of the hour. "Residents work under tremendous pressure and stress. This leads to depression in them. At times they start resorting to alcohol and smoking to relieve the pressure. But once recreational activity lead to abuse of alcohol it can have detrimental effect. Recently the incident of JJ Hospital where three doctors were caught by police in drunken condition and were later punished by the authorities is an example," he said.

Depression due to various issues like working late hours or working for more than 48 hours at a stretch is a common phenomenon in residents. This causes irritation which indirectly leads into miscommunication or irrational behavior with the patient. Actually every medical college can insists a six monthly mental health screening of its residents on its own. But practically unless anything is made mandatory in our system no one be it authorities or the residents will on their own come forward to conduct this screening.

"And hence we have written to the MUHS vice chancellor Arun Jamkar to accept MARD's request and make the screening compulsory," Dr Mundhada said.

The issue is that right communication at right time between the patient's relative and the residents has now become key to minimize the incidents of assaults on doctors. It is in the interest of both doctors and patients, he said.
