NEET 2016: SC asks for MCI’s response on holding state-wise exams for medical admission


New Delhi, May 3: Supreme Court on Tuesday sought response of Medical Council of India(MCI) to respond to state Governments’ plea to hold separate exams this year. MCI will submit its reply on Thursday. The Supreme Court was hearing petitions by some states and private medical colleges seeking permission to continue with separate tests for admissions in the MBBS and BDS courses.
The apex court on Monday had appointed to set up a three-member panel to oversee the working of the Medical Council of India (MCI).The panel will be head by former chief justice of India R M Lodha, in regard to the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).
As per Supreme Court’s decision, the first round of NEET was held on May 1. Over six lakh students appeared for it and not those not applied for AIPMT will be given opportunity to appear in the second round on July 24. The combined result will be declared on August 17 and the admission process will be declared by September 30. (ALSO READ: Over six lakh students appear for NEET-I)
Various states, including the associations of private medical colleges were aggrieved by the top court’s Friday order reiterating that admission to undergraduate medical courses will be only through National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) to be conducted by the Central Board of School Education (CBSE). Those who have not applied for AIPMT will be given opportunity to appear in round two on July 24. The combined result will be declared on August 17, in order to complete the admission process by September 30 – the deadline set by the apex court in its previous orders.
