As smoke and noise from firecrackers engulfed the city on Diwali, animal welfare groups and volunteers stayed alert to carry out rescue of distressed animals.

Three cows and a calf were charred to death in Chitlapakkam on Thursday night when a barn caught fire from crackers. Blue Cross of India (BCI) volunteers rescued five cows, of which one had burns.

Starting Tuesday night, volunteers from groups like BCI and People for Cattle in India were busy with rescue operations. They were on alert for the next two days as several animals ran helter skelter driven by noise.

BCI received 392 calls on the night of Diwali, which Dawn Williams, the general manager of the organisation, said, was an abnormal spike."We rescued 63 animals including dogs, a calf and a cat. Many animals scared by noise ran looking for shelter.A pet dog that ran away was rescued near Raj Bhavan," he said. However, the number of injured animals due to bursting of firecrackers has come down this year when compared to last year, said K Shravan, the coordinator of Be sant Memorial Animal Dispensary .

Animals get injured when they try to cross roads after they panic on hearing highdecibel sounds.

Very few animals got burn injuries this Diwali season, he said.

Last year more than 50 dogs, cats and birds were brought to their dispensary for treatment. However, this year only 30 of them came in for treatment in the last couple of days.

Doctors at the facility had to amputate the fore legs for two of the dogs that were brought to the dispensary as they were severely injured.Another puppy had a burn injury on its mouth. It was treated at the dispensary, he said.
