Chennai: Southern Railway has planned to run an air-conditioned express trainbetween Chennai Central and Madurai, highly placed sources said. This is likely to be announced with the new timetable which will be in force from November 1 and is aimed at meeting the burgeoning demand to Madurai.

The other major additions to the new timetable will be two other trains — Tambaram-Sengottai and Tambaram-Tirunelveli — which will be formally announced soon, the sources said.

All the trains to Madurai are run from Chennai Egmore, barring the bi-weekly Duronto which is run from Chennai Central. The AC express train would run on Friday night from Chennai and return on Saturday night from Madurai. It will have stoppages at Katpadi, Salem, Karur and Dindigul and in the return direction it will stop at Perambur, sources said.

Apart from this, two other trains — Tambaram-Sengottai and Tambaram-Tirunelveli — are already run as specials by the zonal railway and have been regularised. The train from Chennai Egmore to Bhagat ki Kothi near Jodhpur in Rajasthan which operates once a week, will also start from Tambaram.

Interestingly, the Chennai Central-Madurai Duronto runs with very poor patronage and takes the longer route through Jolarpet and Salem. A proposal has been given to route it through Egmore for which there will be greater popularity, a senior official said.
