Hyderabad: The mother of Rohith Vemula has accepted a compensation of ₹8 lakh offered by the University of Hyderabad.
Soon after Rohith committed suicide on January 17, 2016, university authorities had offered a compensation of ₹8 lakh to the family. However, his family had then refused to accept the compensation.
On Tuesday, Radhika Vemula, Rohith’s mother, accepted a cheque of ₹8 lakh from the university, UoH spokesman Vinod Pavarala told TOI. In a press release issued by the research scholar’s mother, she said her decision to accept the money was taken following the advice of legal and social supporters.
“I have learned that this money is being paid not at the behest of Apparao (UoH vicechancellor), but as per orders of National Commission for Scheduled Castes. You may recall that NCSC, under the leadership of P L Punia, had declared that my son Rohith was a Dalit,” read the press release.
Radhika said she wanted “transparency”, hence decided to make it public that she accepted the compensation.
“I didn’t want rumours flying around that Radhika Vemula has made a secret deal with the university and accepted money… I want to state that the acceptance of the compensation, which is rightfully due to the family and dependents of Rohith, is in no way a compromise with the university management,” stated her statement.
Earlier, Raja Vemula, Rohith’s brother, had been offered a job by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. The Andhra Pradesh government had also offered an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh and a contract teacher’s job to Raja. The family rejected the job offers.
