TIRUNELVELI: Heavy winds and rain hit normal life in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts from Wednesday night damaging 18 houses, uprooting 87 trees and also pulling down 278 electricity poles.

Since the meteorology department had warned of heavy winds two days in advance, the fishermen in the coastal hamlets did not venture into the sea from Wednesday night.

The collectors of the two districts have announced closure of schools and colleges due to the rough weather. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University cancelled all its semester examinations slated for the day.
