No non-academic event in schools and colleges, rules HC

IT'S OUR PLACE: The academic atmosphere in schools should not be vitiated, the court said CHENNAI: No non-academic event can be held in educational institutions, be it school, college or university, the Madras high court has ruled.

Clamping a blanket ban on private programmes on educational institution campuses, Justice N Kirubakaran said: "Any educational institution should be allowed to function as it is, without any interference from the government. The academic atmosphere has to be maintained and should not be vitiated. If the government intends to conduct any exhibition to demonstrate their achievement or whatever it may be, the same can be done anywhere else, except in educational institutions."

Making it clear educational institutions are only for imparting education, the judge said, "No other activity should be undertaken either temporarily or permanently in them."

'Do not use loudspeakers before 5pm'

The judge added, "Only the programmeswith regard to education and incidental programmes could be undertaken in the temple of learning." Justice Kirubakaran was passing the orders on a plea moved by Kathirvel of Students Federation of India (SFI) seeking to restrain the authorities from conducting a government exhibition for 45days in theopen space earmarked for play ground on Chikkanna Government Arts College campusin Tirupur.

VijayNarayan submitted that arrangements had been made already for conducting the exhibition and hence there cannot be any order restraining it. Considering the submissions, the judge permitted the government to conduct the exhibition with certain conditions, including, prohibition touseloudspeakers before 5 pm, and ban against sloganeering insidethecampus.
