Ranchi: Senior RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, along with some 100 RJD leaders and supporters, demonstrated outside Birsa Munda Central Jail on Sunday for over an hour from 12.45pm after not being allowed to meet their party chief Lalu Prasad, who is lodged in a VIP cell.
According to the jail manual, no inmate can entertain visitors on Sundays.
"People can meet their friends, relatives lodged in jail between 8am and noon from Monday to Saturday. If they come tomorrow (Monday) they will be allowed to meet whom they want," said jail superintendent Ashok Kumar Choudhary, referring to Lalu and 15 others who were convicted on Saturday in a fodder scam case.
The RJD battalion raised slogans that got more and more creative with time, from " jail ka fatak tootega Lalu Yadav chhootega (The jail wall will break, Lalu will emerge)" to "dam hai kitna daman me tere dekh liya hai dekhenge, jagah hai kitni jail me tere dekh liya hai dekhenge, kitni lambi jail hai teri, dekh liya hai dekhenge (we'll see how strong your bullying is, how big your jail is)".
Sadar police station officer-in-charge Dayanand Kumar said the protesters withdrew after being told repeatedly that under the jail manual, a meeting could not be allowed.
A jail staff said Lalu, who is sharing his cell with another fodder scam convict Jagdish Sharma, was examined by the jail doctor and is taking medicines. "He has demanded vegetarian food. He read all newspapers, especially news related to his conviction," he said.
VIP cell inmates get cushioned beds and special meals. Lalu's cell also has a TV set.
