Asst prof suicide: HC notice to govt, university, pvt college

A month after an assistant professor of an engineering college committed suicide, after the college management detained his certificates, Madras high court has issued notices to the higher education department, Anna University and principal of Sree Sastha Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Vasanthavanan, had committed suicide at his residence of Tambaram on November 12.

On Thursday, a division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice P Rajamanickam, before which a PIL filed by KM Karthick, president of Educational Institution Employees Association, came up for hearing, issued notices and asked the respondent-authorities and the college to file their responses by January 24, 2019.

Alleging that the college demanded ₹3 lakh for the return of the certificates and even made him to prostrate before the correspondent. The petitioner said when Vasanthavanan lodged a complaint with Nazarathpet police, the station inspector handed over the complaint copy to the principal of the college himself.
