No founder’s quota in govt. colleges: HC
Making it clear that allotment of seats under “founder’s quota” in any engineering college run by the State government is illegal, the Madras High Court has passed an interim injunction restraining the management of Dr. Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi, from making any admission under the quota.
The First Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P. Devadass passed the interim order on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition moved by advocate E. Sankar seeking a declaration that such quotas are illegal, void, and contrary to the provisions of Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Educational Institutions Act, 2006. When the PIL came up for hearing, the Bench said the college was run by the State government. In such an institution, such quota cannot be allowed; moreover, the Apex Court has already declared that such quotas are illegal.
The Bench ordered notice to the government and posted the PIL to June 14 for further hearing.
