CHENNAI: With less than 1% vote share, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to leave a mark on the RK Nagar bypoll. So poor was the national party's performance that even NOTA (None of the Above) option polled higher number of votes than the BJP.
BJP fielded Karu Nagarajan, the party's state unit secretary, as its candidate for the bypoll.

At the end of 19 rounds of counting on Sunday evening, Nagarajan polled 1,417 votes, which was only 0.80% of the total votes polled. In comparison, NOTA received 2,373 votes.

Nagarajan left the counting venue midway through the process after it became evident that the BJP was not going to even remotely alter the outcome, which saw independent candidate T T V Dhinakaran being declared the winner.

Nagarajan later alleged that it (RK Nagar bypoll) was "not a democratic election." He added that political parties, except the BJP, had distributed cash to voters.

Earlier, as the BJP was setting a terrible pace during the counting, Subramanian Swamy tweeted: "TN BJP record: A national ruling party gets a quarter of NOTA's vote. Time for accountability."

Editor of Thuglak magazine and RSS think-tank S Gurumurthy tweeted: "RK Nagar byelection is a fraud. It is bought by Dinakaran by money."
