Chennai: Fares of private buses to destinations in the state have skyrocketed ahead of the festive season. While government buses collect Rs 400-Rs 800 as fare, private operators charge thrice the amount from passengers travelling to south and west Tamil Nadu. For instance, a ticket in an A/C sleeper from Chennai to Nagercoil on Friday evening sold for up to Rs 3,000 on Wednesday. The fare during working days or weekends used to be Rs 700-Rs 1,500 a ticket.
As train tickets are sold out within minutes of the counter opening, many are forced to depend on either tatkal or buses. “Most government buses run full from Koyambedu. Hardly any seats are available when they reach Perungalathur or Kattangulathur. So, it’s better to opt for private buses despite the high fare demanded by them,” said Sankarraman of Maraimalainagar. State transport department authorities have remained a mute spectator to this increase, leaving passengers in the lurch. The government can take action against offenders only if laws are amended to regulate fares by private operators. At present, nothing restricts them from overcharging. TNN
