Chennai: Four school students assaulted an MTC driver at Thiruvottiyur on Thursday, punching him on the nose and leaving him with bleeding injuries after he chided them for travelling on the footboard, police said. The bus, plying between Thiruvottiyur and Koyambedu, reached Raja Shop bus stop, when the students, who were in their uniforms, boarded and stood on the footboard.
After a while, the driver told them to get in as he could not use the rear view mirror and warning that their protruding bags could get entangled in a vehicle and cause their fall. The students, who were making a nuisance of themselves by banging on the side of the vehicle and teasing other passengers, ignored the driver’s appeals. When the bus reached the Tollgate stop, they rushed in, punched him on the nose and fled. The driver was unable to operate the bus and refused to go any further. Some passengers and a police patrol team chased the students but they escaped. Soon, as word of the attack spread and crews of buses passing through Thiruvottiyur alighted from their vehicles and blocked the road. They parked their buses haphazhardly and argued with police who tried to pacify them. Traffic on the busy stretch was affected for a couple of hours during the rush hour. The incensed bus crew refused to heed appeals from passengers who were getting late to work.
Based on a complaint from MTC driver Manikandan, the New Washermenpet police registered a case and launched a hunt for the students.
On Wednesday morning, in Arumbakkam, a group of students from Pachaiyappa’s College created a ruckus in an MTC bus resulting in the crew halting it in the middle of the road.
