Madurai: The syllabus for the BSc Forensic Science and Criminology course at Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) was approved in the senate meeting held on Wednesday.
An expert committee set up by the MKU had framed the syllabus for the course a few months ago, which was approved by the syndicate committee on September 23. While it was already reported to the academic council, a resolution was introduced at the senate meeting on Wednesday. Many expressed concern as a private college had already started the course even before the syllabus was approved. Finally, the resolution moved by K Balakrishnan seeking approval for the syllabus was approved.
“In view of urgency, the syllabus for the said course was sent to the college and the controller of examinations with immediate effect,” the resolution read.
The syllabus for a new degree course BCom professional accounting offered by the distance education department of MKU was also approved with effect from 2019-20. Similarly, syllabus for the new course BSc Fire and Safety Management, a new degree programme offered by a non-autonomous college affiliated to the MKU, was also approved.
Professor V Chinniah from Management Studies introduced a resolution seeking approval from the syndicate committee to appoint a senior-most professor from the MKU as vice-chancellor on a temporary basis, whenever the post falls vacant. But, syndicate members opposed the resolution. However, Chinniah said there is a provision in the statute for the temporary appointment. Vice-chancellor M Krishnan intervened and said that there is a provision for temporary vice-chancellor and it is only for three days. The decision has to be taken by the chancellor, he added.
A new endowment lecture named as Prof a ‘Muthumanickam Endowment Lecture’ instituted by former scholars of the department of education of MKU at the cost of Rs 1 lakh was passed. Another lecture named Prof C R (Chellam Rajamanickam) Endowment Lecture instituted by Chellam Rajamanickam at Rs 2 lakh was also approved.
