Stop hiring teachers on hourly basis: AUT to BDU

Association of University Teachers (AUT) has sought abolition of ad hoc teacher posts on hourly basis in the constituent colleges run by Bharathidasan University. Terming it as intellectual exploitation of qualified teachers, the association asked the university to convert lecturers working on hourly basis to guest faculty members instead.
While guest faculty members are hired for a consolidated pay of Rs 15,000 on ad hoc basis, AUT asked the university to increase their salaries to Rs 50,000 as per a UGC directive. Pointing out that the directive mandates that not more than 10% of faculty members should be ad hoc, AUT general secretary M S Balamurugan questioned the university running all the six constituent colleges entirely with guest faculty.
Since the inception of constituent colleges in 2006, only 31 faculty members were appointed on regular basis with UGC pay even though the number of colleges grew to 10. The remaining 363 guest lecturers and 214 hourly-basis lecturers in these colleges were “permanently temporary”. “Hourly basis lecturers are not paid more than Rs 12,000 a month. This is unlike their counterparts on regular basis who are paid several times for doing the same job,” said Balamurugan. UGC in its earlier guidelines had directed to fix Rs 25,000 as monthly consolidated pay for guest lecturers and increased it to Rs 50,000 about a year ago. Barring the four constituent colleges that were converted into government colleges, the six remaining constituent colleges are entirely run by ad hoc teachers.
