Those entering the Secretariat on Thursday were thoroughly searched after a prankster told officials he had planted bombs there. Sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squads were pressed into service at the Park Town campus.
It all began around 4pm on Wednesday, when the police control room received an anonymous call. The person on the other end claimed to have planted explosives at the Secretariat and residences of senior officials, including chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam. The man said he had planted the devices at the locations as he was upset over the AIADMK MP voting in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament.
Police and bomb quads swung into action in a matter of minutes. Seraches revealed that the call was a hoax and no explosives were found on any of the sites mentioned.
Officers soon traced the call to a man in Coimbatore. “He resides in Coimbatore and a police team detained him on Thursday and are questioning him,” a senior police officer said.
Security at officials’ residences was beefed up to avoid any mishap.
