Colleges permit protests, but remain on toes

TIMES NEWS NETWORK 20.12.2019

Though the protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Tamil Nadu were only sporadic in some colleges, the higher education department has advised colleges to maintain vigil.

“The college campuses across the state are by and large peaceful. Students belonging to some minority colleges are protesting against CAA within their campuses. The officials are advised to keep vigil and take decisions as and when the need arises,” a higher education department official said.

While the protest by students from the University of Madras got attention, police did not allow students from other colleges or universities to join them. Declaration of holidays till December 23 and a subsequent order to vacate hostels quelled the agitation. Students of New College, who have been agitating for the past three days, came out of the college and protested. The college is now shut till New Year. At Loyola College, the management has told students to protest on the campus. “We don’t want them to get into trouble outside,” said A Thomas, principal. “Students need to be enlightened about the developments and we need to allow them to express their views. But the protests must be peaceful,” he said.

Students from Presidency College, The Quaide Milleth College for M e n in Medavakkam, and IIT Madras also protested on their campuses.
