MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Wednesday imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on a woman who joined the Indian Bank by submitting a bogus community certificate.
The woman, R Thenmozhi, had obtained a Scheduled Tribe community certificate by furnishing false information.
Dismissing a writ petition filed by Thenmozhi, the division bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Dr S Tamilvanan directed her to pay Rs 1 lakh to the adi dravidar and tribal welfare department.
The amount should be spent for the welfare of the tribal students in the state, the court said.
Thenmozhi joined the Indian Bank by submitting a community certificate which showed that she belonged to the Hindu Konda Reddis.
When her documents were subjected to scrutiny, the bank came to know that the community certificate was a bogus one. The bank informed her that it would initiate action against her.
Thenmozhi filed several petitions before the high court to stop the bank from initiating action against her.
On July 9, a state-level scrutiny committee certified that she did not belong to the Hindu Konda Reddis community.
Aggrieved over it, she filed a writ petition, which the division bench dismissed with a cost of Rs 1 lakh.
