The higher education
department on Tuesday conducted a review meeting with Vice-chancellors
and senior officials of 13 Universities under its administrative
control. The meeting was held from 10am to 5pm at the Tamil Nadu State
Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) building.
Higher Education
Minister KP Anbalagan attended the meeting, which reviewed a host of
issues including the implementation of schemes, examination reforms,
functioning of syndicate, senate and academic council of all
universities and best practices of institutes.
During the meeting, the Universities were asked to give a list of vacancies of teaching and non-teaching staff within two weeks to the government to facilitate the re-deployment of excess Annamalai University staff for a period of three years on deputation.
Anbalagan enquired about the research projects in universities and discussed the UGC regulation which restricts the number of research scholars that can be guided by professors.
With increasing enrolment rate in the state, he asked VCs if there were enough professors to guide PhD students without flouting the UGC guidelines.
A senior official from a University said that such review meetings would be held once in three months henceforth to discuss issues common to all institutes.
