The Madurai bench of the
Madras high court on Thursday said the Tamil Nadu health secretary has
to file all documents pertaining to the setting up of All India
Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state on August 1, failing
which the secretary should appear before the court on August 7.
The
division bench of justices K K Sasidharan and G R Swaminathan gave this
direction on a public interest litigation filed by one B R Basker
seeking to set up AIIMS in Madurai. When the case had come up for
hearing on an earlier occasion, the Union health ministry told the bench
by filing a counter that it is waiting for the Tamil Nadu government's
response to its plan to set up AIIMS in the state.
The central government wrote a letter to the Tamil Nadu government requesting it to identify three or four suitable alternative locations for AIIMS as approximately 200 acres of land is required to set up an AIIMS type super-speciality hospital cum teaching institution.
