“God has heard my prayers,” was the first response of 70-year-old Prabhavathy Amma to mediapersons gathered outside the court complex after the sentence was pronounced.
From official apathy to attempt on her life, the challenges she faced while fighting for justice for her son during the past 13 years were many. Her rivals were powerful and resourceful to influence the witnesses in the case. As a result, there were many who advised her to drop her fight terming it a lost cause. The legal procedures seemed to crawl on forever, spanning over a decade. There were times when she felt the light at the end of the tunnel was far away. But despite all challenges, her fight resulted in closure. This was exactly why she felt that the success was brought about divine intervention. “I saw him for the last time when he left home to buy provisions for Ona Sadya and new clothes. Now, the sentence of the accused has come close to another Onam’’ she said. The money the cops seized from Udayakumar was given to him by Prabhavathy Amma from her savings.
