Bad day for elderly in city as 4 killed in separate incidents

Four elderly citizens died in separate incidents — one in a road accident, another of burns, a third slipped to death, while a fourth got electrocuted.

In Villivakkam, a 60-yearold woman knocked down by a speeding two-wheeler on Friday died hours later despite treatment. M Valliammal, a flower vendor from the locality, was trying to cross Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road at the SIDCO Nagar junction around 1.30pm when a twowheeler knocked her down. She fell unconscious and was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital where she died in the evening. The Tirumangalam traffic investigation police registered a case and arrested two-wheeler rider G Kumaran, of Padi, for further investigation.

A 65-year-old woman died after she slipped and fell down a flight of stairs at Velachery. She suffered severe injuries on the head and died on the way to hospital. Police said Jothi lived in a first floor apartment. On Friday evening, she was climbing down from the first floor, when she slipped and rolled down the stairs. She was admitted to Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

In yet another accident, a septuagenarian celebrating Karthigai Deepam at her house in Adyar died of burns. Police said S Padma, 73, a resident of Kasturi Bai Nagar Second Main Road, was lighting diyas on December 10, on the eve of Karthigai Deepam when her clothes caught fire. Neighbours hearing her screams admitted her to a burns ward in private hospital in Teynampet. She died of burns on Friday. Her body was sent to Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) for autopsy. Police have registered a case.

In another accident, a 54-year-old man identified as Srinivasan, of Triplicane, was electrocuted while consuming liquor under a thatched metal sheet shed at Evening Bazaar in Park Town. Police said Srinivasan went to a Tasmac outlet and was drinking outside. As it was raining, he took shelter under a metal sheet near the outlet. A snapped live cable came in contact with the metal sheet and he was electrocuted.
