Retd staff of Madras univ protest for pension

Chennai:18.12.2019

After running from pillar to post seeking pension benefits for more than three years, around 100 retired administrative staff members of Madras University on Tuesday sat on a hunger strike demanding immediate settlement of pension benefits.

Due to the severe financial crisis, the University of Madras could not pay any pension benefits for its retired employees from January 2016 to November 2019. “We held talks with the university administration many times but in vain. We have to plan our future based on the pension benefits. But some retired employees have died without even getting pension,” said V C Kamalakannan, president, Madras University administrative staff pensioners association.

Some pensioners received a part of the benefits in 2016.

“We also approached the higher education department, finance department and chief minister and university administration. Nothing has happened so far. The university should immediately settle our dues,” he said. “A syndicate delegation recently met the government seeking grant to distribute pension benefits. Though the state promised a financial grant, it is yet to provide any grant to the university,” said a member of the delegation. “If the university pays the pension benefits, it may not able to pay the salary and pension to staff members,” the member added.
