Number of seats in govt. medical colleges same as last year
The Medical Council of India has approved of two colleges, a government and a self-financing institution, to admit students to the MBBS course for the 2015-16 academic year.
The Villupuram Medical College has been permitted to admit 100 students and the Tagore Medical College has received recognition for five years to admit 150 students.
The Council’s executive committee, however, has deferred its decision on the four-year-old Thiruvarur Medical College till its next meeting. The college, which admits 100 students, requires the MCI’s annual renewal permission to admit students.
The Chennai-based Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, which till 2013-14 admitted 150 students under the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, did not get approval. Taking cognisance of a complaint from K.M. Krishnan, secretary of Chennai-based Society for Common Cause, the committee noted that the college did not have plan approval for construction from the appropriate authority and its bed occupancy was 72.1 per cent on the day of assessment. It did not have wards as per MCI norms for psychiatry or a medical records officer either.
Apart from a range of deficiencies pointed out in the assessment report, the college fell short of 15 beds in the Psychiatry department and post-operative patients were sent to surgical intensive care unit, as it did not have an intensive care unit.
The committee ruled that the institute must submit compliance for rectification of the deficiencies within a month for further consideration.
Last year, as the Centre offered conditional permission to five private medical colleges at the end of the admission season, 450 students lost the opportunity to study medicine.
Director of Medical Education S. Geetalakshmi said the number of seats in government medical colleges this year would be the same as last year (2,565).
The State government was making all attempts to get permission for the new medical college in Omandurar Estate, she said. The college would be attached to Kasturba Gandhi Government Hospital.
Health department officials said under a 70-30 shared scheme, the State government along with the Centre, was expanding its facilities - infrastructure and personnel, in the government medical colleges in Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Madurai. Together in these colleges, the government is hoping to add 450 seats.
