DONT DELAY AWARD OF CERTIFICATES NO LONGER..AU TELLS ALL COLLEGES

CHENNAI: Days after a successful MCA student committed suicide by setting himself ablaze in front of his college campus because of the delay in getting his certificates, Anna University directed all institutions not to delay issuing certificates to successful students.
The university has also issued a notice to the particular engineering college on OMR for an explanation. It also advised students to approach the university directly if their colleges refused to hand over their certificates.
Madhu Kumar (24), of Arupukottai, Virudhunagar district, set himself on fire in front of the college campus, minutes after he stepped out after a tiff with college officials over undue delay in giving him his certificates.
In his dying declaration to a judicial magistrate, Madhu Kumar had said that a particular faculty member had sexually harassed and targetted him.
The dead student’s brother Veera Kumar said Madhu Kumar, who completed the MCA course in 2013, cleared all the arrears a few months ago and had been trying to get his certificates.
He was unable to take up a job because of the delay by the college in handing over his degree certificates.
On October 7, Madhu Kumar had reportedly met the head of his department and had a heated argument with the faculty. Police said he set himself on fire soon after he stepped out of the campus.
Express learnt that Anna University sent a notice to the college asking for an explanation why the college management hesitated to issue the certificates to the student.
Also a circular was sent to all affiliated technical institutes not to delay issuing certificates just because of delays in paying the fees.
A top university official said Madhu Kumar could have approached the university before taking such an extreme step.
